Why Dragons at Secondary School?

With our help, your school can introduce Chinese as a modern foreign language with full confidence, and without the teething issues of establishing a new subject at your school. You can gauge interest and student achievement, and grow the program at your own pace. Many schools have such a positive experience that they have used us for over 5 years!

We have had more than 10 years’ experience teaching Chinese to non-native speakers of all ages. All of our teachers are trained in Dragons teaching methods and pedagogy, and all use our own textbook series. Our books have been written to provide an accessible yet solid foundation for learners of all abilities. Our approach is fun and interactive, designed to spread our own passion for Chinese language and culture.

Our Schools

Dragons has partnered with over 500 schools in the last 10 years. Each year we work with 50-100 schools, including Chinese on curriculum, after-school clubs, trips, and private tuition.

We currently work with over 20 secondary schools in the Greater London area, the majority of which are independent schools. Please see our list of schools.

Timings

We strive to meet all the expectations of a busy school timetable and start with your needs when scheduling. However, we also need to ensure that our teachers have a sensible timetable which does not involve too much travel; given this, we will always ask for maximum flexibility before agreeing on a timetable slot for the year.

1 hour per week is the minimum time required; Dragons will provide teachers according to your timetable requirements. Our lessons are charged on a pro rata basis i.e. 3 classes of 40 minutes are charged at a pro rata rate of 2 hours.

Our Teachers

We have over 50 teaching staff. We recruit our teachers from mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, the UK, the United States and Australia. Our teachers are a well-balanced mixture of native and non-native teachers, which enables us to provide different kinds of teachers for different types of teaching initiatives. Wherever possible, we recruit teachers experienced in UK teaching methods. This enables our teachers to fit quickly into a new school environment. Please see our teacher section for feedback from our teachers.

Teaching Resources

GCSE Exams

GCSE Mandarin Chinese is no different to other GCSEs in Modern languages; students will be examined on skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Dragons will support all the schools requirements during the examination timeline (mocks, parent evenings, invigilation etc.). Dragons have published our own textbooks, which have been endorsed by AQA, the UK’s largest examination board.

Progress and Evaluation

Dragons develops half-termly reports that show the improvement and progression thoughtout the year. We collect the data from the online system where students are able to complete homework and play fun online activites that improve their learning. Dragons aligns homework to the school’s needs and timing requirements.

What our schools are saying

Dragons strongly encouraged The Charter School to bring Mandarin Chinese into the Year 7 curriculum back in 2010. Since then, the language has grown dramatically in interest and it is now taught by Dragons teachers from Year 7 up to Year 11 at which point they sit the GCSE. We have always very much enjoyed working with Dragons and found their teaching staff and teaching materials to meet all the high expectations of both our pupils and parents. Christian Hicks
