Chinese New Year

An exciting programme of Chinese New Year celebrations for pupils in Key Stage 2

During the week commencing Monday 31st January 2022, Dragons Teaching will be running a mini Mandarin enrichment programme for UK pupils in Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6) to celebrate Chinese New Year: The Year of the Tiger.

The 2-hour programme can be run on any school day and at any time, morning or afternoon. The schedule below will easily accommodate your school’s timetable:

  • Session 1: Introduction to Chinese and China! Pupils will spend 30 minutes learning online from one of our expert, friendly Mandarin teachers before spending 15 minutes completing a series of interactive, reward-based activities on the DragonsConnect platform. Pupils will learn greetings, places, Chinese New Year customs and gifts, red envelopes, colours and Chinese characters.
  • Creative activity: Between the two lessons, pupils will be able to engage in a creative activity to celebrate the Year of the Tiger.
  • Session 2: Numbers and the Zodiac. Following a 15 minute break, the second session will follow the same format as the first, with the same teacher leading the pupils through the next lesson on DragonsConnect and pupils completing the associated interactive activities. Pupils will learn how to count 1-10, the significance of the Year of the Tiger, Chinese New Year food, chopsticks, lanterns and lucky knots.

For a total cost of £200+VAT per class (maximum 32 pupils per class), Dragons Teaching will provide two fantastic Mandarin teachers, access to the first two lessons of DragonsConnect and an end-of-course certificate for each pupil. We will also send your school mini lanterns and red envelopes to distribute to participating pupils as themed takeaway gifts.

Blended Learning

Students spend 30 minutes learning basic Mandarin from one of our friendly, expert teachers online before completing fun, interactive exercises on DragonsConnect. In our 15 years of experience we have seen how this style of learning increases pupil engagement.

Cultural Enrichment

While learning Mandarin, pupils will also discover Chinese New Year traditions, particularly the significance of the Year of the Tiger, and other Chinese cultural facts – great to share with friends and family.

Fun and Rewarding

As well as the interactive exercises on DragonsConnect, pupils will receive Chinese New Year gifts as part of the enrichment programme!

See DragonsConnect in action

Our experience of Dragons was excellent and has increased our numbers in the Mandarin Excellence Programme from 15 to over 20. We would definitely want to work with Dragons again with our new Year 7s.

Dragons have been very well received – the staff are knowledgeable, approachable and have very good classroom presence. They make the lessons fun, whilst ensuring that the girls learn. The enthusiasm of the girls is outstanding – they really enjoy the lessons and also the interactive resources outside class.

We certainly feel that what Dragons Teaching provided exceeded our expectations and were delighted, as were the children, that their learning could continue during their home learning. They have really embraced all things Mandarin and now that they are back in school, their house point chart has their names in Mandarin characters!
